There’s a name that just about everybody recognizes, whether it sparks feelings of sentiment or dislike, almost everyone knows who Billy Graham was. Billy Graham’s “God’s Good News” contains some of the late evangelist’s classic insight. The book contains more than 60 Bible stories with direct readings from selected scriptures of the NKJV. This children’s devotional is illustrated by Scott Wakefield, whose charming artwork is arguably one of the best features of the book.
At the end of each Bible story is a short devotional reading written by Graham. To be frank, I am not entirely fond of certain doctrinal assertions made in these readings and a few things written that may have been unintended such as “On that first Easter morning, something happened that had never happened before in the history of the human race — and would never happen again: someone came back from the dead, never to die again” which appears to deny the physical resurrection of the rest of us. Most of the devotionals, though, are what one might expect from the average children’s book.
The Bible stories themselves are well-selected and important for children to learn, though I would suggest this for devotional purposes rather than instructional with guidance from a theologically sound grown-up. Overall, I liked the artwork and the stories and Graham’s devotionals are, for the most part, insightful.
